F. Liszt: Harmonium works, Vol. 1 (Lars David Kellner)

Franz Liszt's complete works for harmonium solo

Lars David Kellner has intensively studied Franz Liszt's late musical works. This applies not only to the piano, but also to the harmonium - an instrument to which the composer regularly devoted his attention, especially in the later years of his life.

"The works often have a breathing dynamic, they are directed entirely inward - just like the air current in the harmonium. Therefore, a suction wind instrument with its intimate sound seems virtually predestined for the musical performance.

With the explicit instrumentation "for harmonium or organ" (e.g. "Pope's Hymn") or "piano ossia armonium" ("Christmas Tree"), Liszt assigns the harmonium an equal role to other keyboard instruments. In spite of all this, many pieces have only been recorded on the organ or piano up to now - recordings on the harmonium are rare or not available at all" (Lars David Kellner, booklet text to the album).

Recorded at Evangelische Kapelle Haar, Mannborg Stil 46.

The album contains several first recordings for harmonium:

Christmas Tree (S. 186/I)

Ave Maria (S. 545)

A Magyarok Istene (S. 674)

Prayer (S. 265)

The Pope Hymn (S. 261)

"Kellner has studied Liszt's works for the harmonium so intensively - one might almost say 'afflicted' - that his interpretations have attained great depth and maturity." (M. Straeter, German Liszt Society, 2020)
